statement of intent
How do you intend to use the 4 areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief?
Product 1
I aim to make a magazine which appeals to my 16-25 middle to upmarket left leaning audience who have an interest in music. I intend to achieve this by using young, activist models who aim to make a difference and teach their audience about stereotypes in the music industry. I aim to appeal to a wide audience by using both male and female models and include varying music genres such as pop and rap music. My research showed me that popular music magazines such as NME and Mojo aim to target a more male audience and have a more male readership. I aim to make my magazine appeal to both males and females and do this by promoting female artists and women's rights on my magazine. I also found that in many music magazines there are intertextual references and so I have included popular rap artist’s nicknames in my rap front cover such as ‘Carti’ and ‘A$AP’ as these will be recognisable to my target audience. Also, my choice of masthead, ‘PACE’, has strong musical links due to its association with musical words such as tempo and beat. My masthead is straightforward and impactful and conveys the message that this a music magazine.
My front covers and contents pages will be aesthetically pleasing, and I will use a strong image to text ratio. My images and colour palette will be visually attractive to my audience, and I will use interesting coverlines and valuable features and interviews which will actively engage my audience. This is conventional of music magazines as the models are commonly popular models, with the coverlines promoting both their cause and what is inside of the magazine. I have reflected this with my coverlines such as ‘how Pellicci fights for justice’, and ‘exclusive interview’. I aim to construct opposing representations, showing my female model as strong and powerful and fighting for a cause. This is unconventional of some music magazines as they aim to show women with more venerable and soft representations. My 16-25 left leaning target audience will accept this as the preferred meaning of my magazine as their cultural competency will allow them to value and appreciate a strong woman being shown. I have considered Van Zoonen’s feminist theory when constructing my magazine as this influenced me to show my female model as breaking down the stereotypes in magazine and showing women as strong and powerful.
Product 2
For my website I intend to create an aesthetically pleasing and attractive product that remains synergy to my brand identity of my print magazines. From my research about print magazine sales declining, I will aim to create similarities between my website and magazine, whilst offering more interactive opportunities such as quizzes and more images to make it visually appealing. My website will include more in-depth reviews and interviews with my models than at is possible in print magazines and will offer different subscription types for both my magazine and website opportunities. My website will be highly interactive with linked pages and opportunities to get in touch. My website will be easy to navigate and will have a solid sense if brand identity with its same fonts and colour palette. My website will include a 30 second audio-visual clip of one of my models doing a ‘fit check’. This allows me to link music to fashion, something which I believe my audience will be very interested in.
How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production?
It is important for my magazine and website to hold a sese of brand identity and synergy to show their association and to achieve a clear sense of identity throughout both products. I will achieve this by using the sae fonts and composition on my magazine pages and colour scheme on my website. This will make both my products similar in look and style. I will use consistent calls to action such as ‘turn to page...’ n my contents page and links to buy my print magazine on my website. I will use a bright and fun house style between my magazine and website which is visually appealing and engaging for my 16-25 left leaning target audience. I aim to make my audience active by promoting the use of emailing in reviews, participating in quizzes and purchasing the print magazine. This will increase audience engagement and ensure m y audience is active.
