Supercurricular

Massolit semiotics super curricular

 Massolit- semiotics

  • Semiotics- study of signs and symbols and their meaning

  • Tool for analyzing signs of cultures

  • Originally thought about by Desussour who was interested in languages- he taught semiotics but never published his work so after he died, his stude3nts it together their notes and published his teaching in 1966

  • Also, sanders wrote about semiotics

  • n3ither of these people knew about each other

  • often in advertising, main message and secondary (cultural) message

  • these can be decoded by semiotics

    Media Magazine super curricular

    Barbie- a feminist film

    • The Barbie film, despite aiming to pursue feminism, is shaped by male gaze still and white Western beauty standards and so Margot Robbie perfectly fits these conventions and appeals to the male gaze, which remains a large part of TV and film today

    • The speeches in this film were valuable, yet lacked impact due to not being shown, but only being told. This was also contradictory due to the upbeat usual conventions of Barbie films

    • It was said that it could be seen as a promotional advert to convince the audience that buying a Barbie doll is a feminist act due to this film changing the meaning of Barbie into a sign of progressiveness, yet purchasing a Barbie dol does not help pursuer feminist actions

    • The Barbie film attempts to challenge oppressive systems and stereotypes yet uphold them at the same time despite this being said to be impossible

    • The Barbie narrative resolved when she becomes human in the real world and so she stops being seen as an object, yet this is not reflective of real-life oppression

    Media super curricular- newspapers

    • Steve Coogan praises ’brave’ Prince Harry for bringing phone hacking case

    • Claims other members of the royal family had made a ‘Faustian pact’ with the tabloid press

    • ‘I have great admiration for Prince Harry’

    • This came after Judge Timothy Fancourt ruled that the phone hacking was widespread and habitual

    • Coogan hailed the Duke of Sussex for bringing the High Court case, saying he had shunned an alleged Faustian pact between tabloid newspapers and the Royal Family

He found that the duke’s case was proven in part with 15 of 33 articles that were presented in court to be part of phone hacking or other unlawful information gathering

Hitchcock’s cinematography in ‘Psycho’

Camera movement

Hitchcock’ camera movement are deliberate and adds to the narrative. He uses smooth tracking shots to follow characters e.g. the opening sequence that follows Marion from her office to her car. This tracking keeps the audience engaged and builds tension.

He also uses static shots to create a sense or normalcy and calm before chaos occurs, such as Marion’s arrival at the Bate’s Motel.

Rick Altman’s genre theory

Altman’s theory highlight the complexity and dynamism of genres. He consider genres as evolving processes with both semantic and syntactic dimensions, and recognising their economic and cultural roles. Altman provides a comprehensive framework for understanding how genre shapes and are shaped by the film industry and society.
